Janelle Pauli — marketing manager for VisionWeb in Austin, TX — may go into "beast mode" as she attacks her professional goals, but just wait 'til she gets on the volleyball court.
She has been a volleyball player since 5th grade, and currently is part of a competitive women's league that plays weekly games and travels for monthly tournaments. On top of her volleyball schedule, she fits in weekly games with her co-ed flag football league!
For Janelle, being active in sports helps to keep her focused on her work and professional life.
"I grew up playing all kinds of sports. I have a super-competitive personality and sports has also been a great outlet for my competitive spirit," she says. "Volleyball specifically has been an easy sport to keep up with as I've gotten older and out of school organized sports. I found a great competitive play indoor women's league here in Austin that gives me the chance to play once a week along with monthly weekend tournaments.
"Sports has always been a big part of my life, and something that is very important to maintaining in my work-life balance. And I think keeping a regular exercise schedule during the week helps keep my energy levels up at work," she continues.
Through her passion for sports, Janelle has found something that goes beyond exercise.
"It's also been a great way to network and meet many women who I otherwise wouldn't have crossed paths with," she notes. "It's also another avenue to brush up on my teamwork skills! Volleyball is a big team sport and you need to rely on everyone to do their part (just like at work, or in the OWA), so it's another way for me to adjust to working with other people and learning how to work with and communicate with different personalities."
Janelle has been an OWA member since 2012, and is an active member of the Digital Marketing Committee.
"Being a part of the OWA has given me the opportunity to meet so many great women, and has helped me expand on my knowledge of the optical industry as a whole. I truly enjoy attending the OWA events at the Vision Expos, and also sharing my marketing expertise and learning from others who are part of my committee."
