The OWA has been honoring some of the industry's brightest stars with the Pleiades Award since 2000. The Pleiades award spotlights individuals who have shown a commitment to the mission of the OWA by fostering the growth of women in the industry. This award is named after the star cluster "The Pleiades" in the constellation of Taurus.
In 2010, the OWA is proud to introduce the Pyxis Award (pronounced pik-sis). Maintaining the celestial theme, Pyxis is a constellation in the southern sky and known as "The Compass". The Pyxis Award will be presented to a member of the OWA who actively participates in the organization and promotes the OWA throughout the optical industry, contributing to OWA's continuing growth. The recipient of the Pyxis Award is exceptional in her commitment to support and develop the OWA. She helps set direction of the organization by her actions and inspires by her leadership.
A pyxis is also identified as a Greek vessel used by women to hold precious items. The duality of the definition of Pyxis sets the stage to present this new prestigious award at the upcoming event in NY.
Please congratulate the OWA's first recipient of the Pyxis award — Lorinda Fraboni. Lorinda is the IS Manager at Walman Optical Company in Minneapolis, MN and a past president and founding member of the OWA.
