My friends call me: Karen
I am the: Owner, KARE Consulting/Eyes On Dementia
I joined the OWA in:2009
Words my colleagues use to describe me are:Selfless, caring, intuitive, empathetic, energetic, connective
The career advice I would give my 18-year-old self is:Same thing I told myself when I was 18. Map your future, have a plan knowing that it is not truly yours to decide. Be more confident in who you are at heart because that is what you will lead with. Ask all the questions!
When I think about my career, I'm most excited about:The time in my career that I am truly able to do what is on my heart. While my recent journey to get to this point is not one that I would have chosen, it has brought me joy, purpose, and the opportunity to truly make a difference. It is because of years of dedication, learning, and truly loving what I do in the eye care industry.
Daily, I read:4 different messages that speak to my life and career currently.
1. Articles, subject matter that I seek each day based on what I wake up and feel my soul needs.
2. Notes and cards from loved ones that I have received over the years.
3. Journal pages that I wrote from 1982 - 2011. I have 4 full shelves of journaling.
4. Anything that will support my mission to increase elder vision awareness, coping with cognitive decline, TBI/CTE in elders.
My theme song is:Anything John Mellencamp that most do not know. Days Like This — Wasn't my original but my son picked it for our son-mother dance. I would tell him on good and bad days, there will be Days Like This.
I recommend:Start every day with a literal or metaphorical beautiful view. Reach out to someone that you haven't in a while. Talk to strangers. Try to leave where you are now a better place. Be open and honest. Journal at least one thought per day that is a message to you later or someone that will read it later.
