A trusted mentor once gave me the advice that you don't have to change jobs or move companies to gain new experiences and skills. She said, "growing where you're planted" can lead to as much professional growth and success as starting anew.
One worthwhile and fulfilling way to gain experience, expand your network, and gain fresh perspective without uprooting, is to serve on a volunteer board or committee. We all have causes we're passionate about. Whether it's our kids' school, a charity, a professional association, a hospital, a church, or a sports club, getting involved can enrich the mind, soul, and career.
Some of the benefits include:
The Boy Scouts of America is an organization that has been incredibly important to my sons. When the local council had a need to expand its brand, I was able to jump in and use my marketing and communications skills. Being able to contribute in an area where I have professional experience has been fun and gratifying. As an OWA Board member, I am able to grow within the optical industry alongside an amazing group of professional woman whom I admire and learn from every day. This exchange of ideas allows me to bring renewed energy and creativity to my own work and team at VSP.
Your time is valuable, so when you choose a volunteer position, be selective.
Done well, volunteer service can be highly rewarding and fun. You'll expand your resume, round out your experience, and broaden your network. It also could point you in the direction of a new career opportunity. Or it will help you to appreciate and grow wherever it is you're currently planted.
